Hundreds of lakes ready for camping, fishing, hiking, biking

Island Lake in Bowman Lakes Recreation Area / Tom Stienstra

The conditions at Bowman Lakes Rec Area right now is testimony to what is happening this year across the Sierra Nevada, Cascades and Shasta-Siskiyou range: An early spring, with summer now imminent.

This region is nestled on the west slopes of Tahoe National Forest, a short hop from I-80 and Highway 20, generally north of Yuba Gap near Donner Pass and Truckee.

Frozen snowfields can still be found on high north-facing slopes. But as school gets out for summer and the vacation season gets underway, spring is arriving to national forest recreation areas with access to hundreds of small, gorgeous lakes.

The best spots in national forest in Northern California are destinations where you can find a bouquet of lakes within close proximity. This allows visitors to explore back roads and find campsites, trailheads. lakes, streams, ridges and lookouts. You can often take your pick where you want to camp, hike, fish, in some cases mountain bike. The complete story with 13 picture gallery appears in Thursday’s San Francisco Chronicle at:
